Bakuchiol: Botanical Retinol Alternative
Retinol has been on the top of beauty favorites list for years, but we also know that it can cause irritation, redness and increased photosensitivity (if used during the day) for those with sensitive skin. The question on everyone’s minds is: how can we get all the benefits of a Retinol treatment without risking irritation?
The skincare industry has been sensationalized with the discovery of Bakuchiol.
What is Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is extracted from the seeds and leaves of Babchi’s plant, which is scientifically named the Psoralea corylifolia, native to Indian subcontinents. Though it is a newcomer for skincare, it is reported that Bakuchiol has long been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine due to its magical beneficial goodness to heal various skin diseases.
In the recent past, the Bakuchiol has blown up in favor and hailed as a gentle botanical alternative to Retinol because it works as a retinoid analog. Bakuchiol emulates to follow similar cellular pathways and gene targets, leading to cell turnover, thereby stimulating collagen production and improving the overall appearance such as reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and photodamage while re-densifying the skin.
The science behind Retinol & Bakuchiol
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative, known as the industry’s gold standard for reversing the signs of skin aging. Retinoid receptors are proteins that naturally occur in the skin. Retinol works through these specific receptors that activate an upturn in gene expression and increased production of collagen Typ I, III, and IV, plus aquaporin -3 expression. Other than that, it promotes cell turnover, which results in more even, bright younger-looking skin.
Bakuchiol has no structural resemblance to Retinol. However, studies are showing that it has similar effects on the skin. According to a clinical comparison study published in The British Journal of Dermatology it was found that there was no significant difference in terms of wrinkle reduction or improvement in hyperpigmentation between Bakuchiol and Retinol. The recent studies also found that it is less irritating compared to Retinol as Bakuchiol does not decrease the size of oil glands. In addition to its anti-aging and anti-inflammatory property, Bakuchiol also enhances anti-acne properties.
Extra Benefits of Bakuchiol
- As Bakuchiol is significantly less irritating than Retinol, it can be used for people with sensitive skin. By boosting cell turnover and healthy cell renewal, it helps soothe and heal your skin from the inside out… Being gentle on skin, anyone can use it.
- The proven anti-acne effect, which might be beneficial for acne-prone and similar skin concerns, helps in reducing the side effects of the application.
- Due to its photostability, it is safe to use in the mornings too! (Retinoids can break down and lose its potency when it is exposed to sunlight or air. Therefore, Retinol should be limited to night time)
